This essay will explore how Hamlet suffers from what is known in legal terms as a substantial disorder of thought, mood, perception, orientation, or memory which grossly impairs his judgment, behavior, capacity to recognize reality or ability to meet the daily requirements of life. This is known as bipolar disease or manic depression and the main symptoms are listed as extreme hostility, violent mood swings, hallucinations, hyper sexuality, extreme loquaciousness, suicidal tendencies, paralyzing vacillation (indecisiveness), constant fatigue and reckless behavior. This essay will show that Hamlet suffers from this disorder because he suffers from many of its symptoms. When Hamlet stabbed Polonius, the King's counselor and Ophelia's father, he was unable to understand the consequences and criminality of his actions and cannot, therefore, stand trial for the wrongful death of Polonius.
