Example of a close read by connotation in a poetry analysis paper on "Design":
The three denotations of "design," the title of the poem, are to plan an event (verb), a pattern (noun), and scheming person (adjective). “Design” as a controlling pattern is the most significant connotation of design because it contributes to the poem’s idea that in order to know God one must look closely at the patterns or "design" or in nature. If there is a design then there must be a designer. The problem in this poem is that what Frost's speaker witnesses in nature makes him question the benevolent intention of the designer. If the design is sinister then the designer is sinister as well.
